Portland Restaurant: All-Way

What: All-Way
Where: 615 SW Broadway Ave
When: Daily 11am - 11pm
Honeys Heart: All-Way Burger

Having grown up on an island north of Seattle, I don't have nostalgic feelings about In-N-Out Burger. But based on my handful of visits with Katie in California, it is definitely something I wish we had easier access to - but on the other hand, maybe I'm glad we don't! Luckily (for better and worse...), we have an awesome diner serving up "In-N-Out-esque" burgers daily.

Peter Bro of Broder has taken over the former Red Coach space (which it occupied for 55 years), leaving the pleather red booths and old time-y feel, to serve quarter-pound patties on homemade buns with special sauce, housemade pickles, butter lettuce, and cheese. Tomatoes are served seasonally and bacon can be added for $2.

Though we were originally pining for a milkshake, they aren't currently on the menu (though they did say they could make a chocolate or vanilla shake) and instead opted for some cocktails made with All-Way's housemade soda. Such a good decision! We got the bourbon with ginger soda and gin with lavender soda ($5 each). I want that lavender soda for sipping on the deck this summer!

Burger options include the All-Way which starts with one patty and can be sized all the way up to a 4 Way. The menu also features fried chicken, fish, veggie burgers, salads, and more.

I went for the All-Way ($4.50) with onion rings ($3). The onion rings were extra crispy, but I did steal quite a few of Adam's shoe string fries. The two of us probably could have shared one side instead of getting both!

Adam chose the 2 Way ($5.25) with a double patty and cheese. Definitely a little more filling if you don't think a quarter pound will cut it, but with the fries ($3.50) it seemed like plenty to me!

Everything was awesome and it definitely satisfies a burger craving. Even though the prices are already reasonable, the happy hour is from 3-6pm and definitely worth checking out. With the purchase of a drink- which are only $5, the HH menu includes $1.50 fries and onion rings, $5 chicken wings, and $1 off all burgers and sandwiches. Yes please!

5 in 5: Trifecta Tavern, Lincoln, Paley's Place, Tilt, and Bibi2go

Hey guys! Time for everyone's (or maybe just Doug's) least favorite type of post: the 5 in 5. You know the rules! Or if you don't, there are some previous 5 in 5's here and here.

Trifecta Tavern
Occasion: A friend raved about it, plus Ken Forkish is awesome.
The Five: Brussel sprouts to die for.

Lincoln
Occasion: Pre-movie happy hour.
The Five: Terrible service. Won't be back.*

Paley's Place
Occasion: The first full day of #snowpocalypse meant we were confined to our neighborhood when choosing early happy hours.
The Five: Why didn't we visit sooner??

Tilt
Occasion: More snow, more burgers.
The Five: Being bad tastes so good.

Bibi2go
Occasion: Kel and I met for what we were hoping would be a delicious and semi-healthy lunch.
The Five: Microwaved egg. Cold rice. No.

*This description warrants an explanation, even if it's against the rules. Doug and I sat at the bar at Lincoln for happy hour. We ordered off the menus given to us, only to have the bartender snap "that's not on the menu anymore! Where did you get those menus!?" before snatching the menus away from us. He then literally threw new menus at us and did his best to ignore us the rest of the night. I understand not all bartenders are super friendly, but nothing calls for outright rudeness like that, especially when Doug and I had done nothing wrong. (I mean, the family next to us brought in McDonald's for their kid... that's gotta be a worse offense, right?)

Portland Restaurant and Happy Hour: Double Dragon Revisited

What: Double Dragon
Where: 1235 SE Belmont
Happy Hour: Weekdays 3-6pm, Everyday 10pm-Midnight
Honeys Heart: Miso Disco Fries

Last week, Kel and I were invited to a tasting and Hot Toddy demonstration at Double Dragon. You might remember that Kel and Adam went there for dinner recently and tried the Banh Mi Burger, house chips, and Curried Coconut Ramen. Their meal looked delicious so I was happy to get to try some of Double Dragon's Vietnamese fusion cuisine for myself!

Over blogger small talk (How often do you post? How long have you been blogging? How come we've never seen you at one of these before?*), we sampled a number of dishes. My top three favorites were the Szechuan Burger ($9) with bacon and szechuan peppercorn relish, Miso Disco Fries ($7) with miso bacon gravy and queso fresco, and Kimchi & Bacon-Braised Collard Greens ($3).

Happy to see the burger and the fries are part of the happy hour menu!:

The evening also included a cocktail tasting and demonstration. We tried Double Dragon's Hot Toddy two ways- hot and cold. I was a little skeptical of how the drink would work cold, but with its added absinthe wash, it was really tasty.

Unfortunately we had to leave before the demonstration (the Blazers were honoring the Winterhawks so you know, #rosebudproblems) but I'm sure it was lots of fun. Looking forward to reading about it on other blogs :)

Thanks so much to Double Dragon for hosting us!

*Our loyal readers (hi Mom!) already know the answers to these bloggery questions, but for the newbies:
  • How often do you post? Whenever we damn well feel like it
  • How long have you been blogging? Since 2008, 5 whole years. Yeesh!
  • How come we've never seen you at one of these blogger events before? What can we say? Sometimes it takes time for genius to be recognized...

Pasadena Gastropub: Kings Row

What: Kings Row
Where: 20 East Colorado Blvd, Pasadena
Honeys Heart: Shishito Burger

Adam and I traveled South recently for our friends wedding in Sunland, California and had the pleasure of spending a few extra days with my family and our close friends from high school, Katelyn and Michael. It was so freaking fun!

Michael and Katelyn moved to Pasadena in January and were excited to take us to their favorite bar in their new hood, Kings Row. It was super tasty and we happened to be there on Monday trivia night. We did our best, but fell short of a win...way short.

The gastropub had so many unique and delicious sounding options. The Crack Mac ($10) with dutch fontina, parmesian, vahlrona white chocolate was tempting, but I went for the Shishito Burger ($14) with 21-day dry aged beef, blistered shishitos, white cheddar, hoisin bbq, arugula and pickled ginger aioli. It was definitely the best burger I've had in a while! Oh, and you'll notice I went for the salad (weird) but it was so good. I'm on an arugula kick and the dressing was sort of mustard-y.

Adam went for the Highland Park Pulled Park ($13) that was braised in coke and oj and served with a chipotle pomegranate bbq sauce. Yum. And those fries...

Michael and Katelyn had only come for drinks, not food, so we read some Yelp reviews. One guy said that if it was his last meal he would get the Jay's Burger ($14). I don't know if Michael agreed that it was last meal worthy, but that bacon looks delish and jalapeno mayo is a great addition to an otherwise fairly common burger combination.

Katelyn chose the Proper Fish N' Chips ($14) which look perfectly cooked. Plus I just love that they served food in little tins.

The drinks weren't exceptional and maybe a little overpriced, but we were in California, they were good, and bonus points for cute jars. I think beer (if I drank it) might have been the way to go!
